The Advantages of Being a Woman
When asked, “Would you like to be a man or woman in your next life if your gender could be selected?” some may prefer to be a woman, while others may argue that being a man has more advantages because men enjoy more independence, have more courage, and need less concern for personal security, which means no curfew and more pleasure at night. Although there are always pros and cons on either side, being a woman is more desirable than being a man in three areas: emotions, responsibilities, and freedom in dress.
First of all, a woman can express her emotions freely. In general, since a man was young, he has often been taught to be strong and tough or to never cry in public. He needs to repress his sorrow, depression and despair in his heart, and never let the tears be shed, especially in front of others. If the negative emotion continues, he might burden his heart with too much stress, just like an over-stretched rubber band, which could result in defeat in his lifetime. However, a woman’s tears are usually considered to be a demonstration of sincerity, innocence, and cuteness. She can laugh and scream whenever and wherever she wants. For example, a woman, when seeing a touching movie, doesn’t worry about being laughed for having hot tears well up in her eyes. In addition, a woman can not only hug her close friends without wondering if others think she is a lesbian, but also behave irrationally like a spoiled child, as her beloved one might find it cute.
Furthermore, in male supremacy countries, a man is said to have been born to have greater responsibilities than a woman. The pressure of securing financial stability for the family is often considered to be a man’s job. If the bills cannot be paid, the pressure will be on him. Even though double-income households are the trend in today’s society, a man is still regarded as the man of the house, an economic and mental support of the family. Sometimes, some men will worry about their salary being lower than their wives’, which will make them lose face and even drastically ruin their confidence. As for a woman, nowadays she is more economically independent than ever before and is able to compete with men for jobs and wages. She earns a living not only to support the family but also to achieve personal ambitions. The pressure on a woman is far less than that on a man.
Finally, a woman can dress herself as beautifully as she likes. From the merchandise arrangement in department stores, people can realize that the majority of the beautiful and fashionable goods are for women, not men. There are a variety of accessories such as earrings, necklaces, hair clips, bags, hats, scarves, and fingernail polish available for women, but men’s fashions are limited to shirts, pants, suits and ties. The number of choices for men is relatively less. Moreover, as an old saying goes, “A girl will doll herself up for him who loves her,” it is also perfectly justifiable for a woman to strive for beauty. However, if a man pays too much attention to his appearance, he might stir up some negative sentiments towards himself. Someone might say, “He must be a homosexual,” or “He is so disgusting!” In addition, if a man looks too beautiful or delicate, people might think he is too feminine. Most of the judgments are usually negative.
To conclude, not necessary to keep her feelings inside, a woman can thoroughly and freely express her emotions. While being a man is stressful, a woman has fewer responsibilities and pressures from the family, the most important association in society. What is more, with different styles of make-ups and hairdos everyday, a woman can enjoy the diversity in making herself more adorable. Therefore, it is clear that being a woman has far more advantages than being a man.
